You Will Get a Smaller Window To File Your Taxes This Season

Due to the government shutdown, American will get an even shorter window than the traditional Jan 1st to April 15th submission window. Now, don’t get me wrong, people will still be able to submit them early but the IRS will not be accepting and processing them till at least Feb 28th or later and the same due date of April 15th applies.

Why is this happening?

Well, due to the government shutting down for 3 weeks, IRS workers now have to catch up for that lost time. %90 percent of operations were shut down for that 3 weeks and workers not only have to catch up on that lost time but also have to get 50 systems up and running in order to process over 150 million tax returns for this upcoming season.

Is there anything I can do to speed it up?

Honestly, the answer is no. The IRS has to get these systems up and running before they can start accepting returns. People can still submit them early or mail them in but this doesn’t mean that they will be processed as soon as there submitted. The IRS won’t be able to accept or process returns until the date mentioned above or later. It’s unfortunate but people will just have to wait a little bit longer to get their taxes back this year.

Will I have extra time to submit since they are starting late?

Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no as well. The same deadline applies regardless of the late start date. It shouldn’t take people any longer to get their taxes done just because they are starting late. People should still submit their tax returns at the normal time but they just won’t get processed until the opening day. It’s not the picture perfect scenario but it doesn’t really mean anything different to you other than having to wait longer to get your income tax refund back.

Is there anything I should do differently when submitting?

Nope, just submit your taxes like regular whenever you are ready and as soon as the systems are up and running, the government will start accepting and processing returns.

It might take a little longer for you to get your income taxes back this season but there’s really nothing anyone can do about it. Just take a deep breath and tell yourself that Feb. 28th is not that far away.
