Clean sweep expected for Didi in WB; BJP likely to win in Assam

Exit polls released on Monday are hinting towards a second term for Mamta Banerjee in West Bengal and a historic win for the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in Assam. However, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are likely to hold onto their old legacies as per the polls.

Business Standard’s Aditi Phadnis believes that it will be a clean sweep for Didi in West Bengal this time around. While there are experiments happening in the state, polls are indicating a high number of seats for Mamta Baneerjee, Phadnis says.

Speaking to CNBC-TV18, Phadnis says that in Assam, expecting a fourth term for current CM Tarun Gogoi is excessive. “If exit polls are saying that BJP has upper edge in Assam, then people there are ready to try out something new,” she says.

Major challenge for BJP in Assam, she says, will be uniting majority and minority both in administration. BJP will have to “create conditions in Assam where no one feels left out,” Phadnis says.

In Tamil Nadu, Phadnis says, Jayalalitha may be down, but is not yet. A strong government as well as strong opposition will come up in the state which was not there in last Assembly, she adds. Balance of advantage lies in favor of DMK.

In Kerela, however, struggle continues for BJP, who have no chance of winning.
