9.55 pm: Meanwhile, reactions coming in from the Congress party, which says the “honeymoon” phase of the government is over and that people are starting to ask questions of it.

“The honeymoon phase of Modi-led government is over and it cannot be extended further anymore. In a democracy, people have the right to question the government and it has already started with the Centre,” Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha told PTI.

Releasing a book on the “failures” of the Modi government in the last two years, he alleged that “the only development which has happened is on the front of communalism”. 

9.40 pm: Prime Minister Modi will be joining shortly, he tweets.

9.25 pm: “Modiji’s mission is to bring governance into the palms of the people,” says IT and Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. “We want every Indian to be digitally connected.” 

9.15 pm: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is also speaking, talking about the importance of skill development, training the youth and bring more women into the workforce. 

9.10 pm: The government’s focus on entrepreneurship means people are being encouraged to become “job creators’ instead of “jobseekers”, says MakeMyTrip CEO Deep Kalra. 

9.05 pm: HRD Minister Smriti Irani is now speaking, outlining the government’s achievements in the area of skill development.

“Nobody talked about skill development in this country till Prime Minister Modi took office,” says Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy. 

9.00 pm: The much-ignored waterways area is also being prioritised, Gadkari said. “It will be the achievement of our government.”

Crucially, in this regard, the government has already passed an Waterways Act that converts many existing river routes into National Waterways. 

8.55 pm: Gadkari also outlined an ambitious target for road construction: 41 km per day, up from about 22 kms currently. The government’s earlier target was 30 kms.

Under Gadkari, the pace of road construction has picked significantly.

8.50 pm: Roads, transport and waterways minister Nitin Gadkari, arguably one of the better performers in the Cabinet, spoke.

“Under the Prime Minister, we shed the policy paralysis that we inherited,” he said.

The roads ministry, he added, has unclogged highways worth lakhs of crores of rupees.

“Only a few projects are still stuck due to financial viability issues,” he said.

8.45 pm: Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh talked about the investments government is making in the area of agriculture. “We have started facilitating irrigatio facilities in every village,” he said.

“Lal Bahadur Shastri’s clarion call of Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan is being realized by our Prime Minister,” he said.

8.40 pm: Singer Kailash Kher crooned a song a while ago on the subject of cleanliness, and praised the government for its actions in the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan. 

8.35 pm: A galaxy of ministers, actors and other celebrities are present at the function.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was the first to speak, outlining the various achievements of the government, following by Amitabh Bachchan, Raveena Tandon and Vidya Balan among actors and Menaka Gandhi, JP Nadda,  Harsimrat Kaur, Chaudhary Birender Singh, Jayant Sinha, Radha Mohan Singh and Najma Heptullah, among others, in ministers.

8.30 pm: Two years ago, the Narendra Modi government swept to power in a historic mandate that gave hope Indians that it would result in upliftment of the poor, creation of thousands of jobs and give a fillip to infrastructure.

The Modi government today is holding a five-hour gala at which at its outlining its achievements over the course of two years.
