Using the clear advantage cards means you will be avoiding high fees on transactions. Overseas ATM fees on other cards can be as much as $7.50 per transaction, while the ‘currency conversion’ fee usually ranges from 1-2% of the amount you take out. These fees can really add up.

One catch with the Wizard Card is that the standard interest rate is quite high. Away around this is simply to keep the card in credit and make sure you set up a pin number before you leave Australia. Keeping the card in credit just means you can use the card like a normal debit/saving account, just without the high fees for overseas transactions.

I’ve personally had one of these cards for a few years and I’ve never had a problem using it overseas. I fly international 2-3 times a year and the card has saved me a great amount on fees.

It’s also a good idea to let Wizard know that you will be using the card overseas. Increasingly Credit Card companies are quick to block the use of cards with unusal transactions (which might just be you using the card overseas for the first time). Give them a call before you leave.

The wizard Clear Advantage Card is a smart choice for Australian travellers. There is currently no other card on the market that waives overseas transaction fees.
