Rewarding Victories With Trophies

Perhaps the supreme representation of success is a trophy. The usual setting is the bigger the trophy, the highest the accomplishment. From the largest of contests, such as major sports events, to the humblest of matches, like a local elementary school’s Spelling Bee contest, trophies are everywhere.

The word trophy came from the Greek word “tropaion” which came from the verb “trope,” which means “to rout.” Ancient Greece used to make trophies on the battlefields of successful fights. The particulars of the battle, along with a dedication to a god, were often inscribed on the bases of the symbols. They were oftentimes dedicated to gods, and to destroy them was considered a blasphemy.

In ancient Rome, trophies were exceedingly big and were often placed on columns and arches. Rather than being an accolade to the victors and the gods on the battlefield, the Romans preferred them constructed in Rome.

No one knew a great deal about its history during the Middle Ages. Although it is believed that they were used as prizes for sporting events in the late 1600s. Silver chalices, as well as two-handled sterling loving cups, were the common shapes used during that period.

Nowadays, trophies come in different types and sizes. Although cups and chalices are still common, they now come in almost every shape thinkable, such as stars, human forms, abstract, and animal forms.

Rather than silver and gold, materials used now include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are much less pricey and can be mass produced.

Trophies aren’t just awarded during sports competitions. They are also given in acknowledgment of individual or group accomplishment. The Academy Awards, a renowned Hollywood awards events, is a good example. Individual abilities like acting, directing and producing, as well as group efforts, such as best film and cast, are recognized with a trophy shaped like a human being.

It’s not only a reward for a particular achievement in sports, acting, discovery or other skills. A trophy represents victory and status. It doesn’t just mean being able to outdo your opponents in a game or contest or being the leader in your field of expertise. Being honored with a trophy likewise means being part of the trophy’s heritage.
